Hal's new trio album "Furious Rubato" Released on Origin Records

After lasr summer's Thrio concert/recording at Pete Douglas's Bach Dancing and Dyanamite Society I flew up to Seattle for a few days to record with my old partner in crime, bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop .

(We had some technical problems with the Thrio recording and have enlisted the technical expertise of drummer Bill Goodwin, who did such a marvelous job of mixing the "Agents Of Change" recording. It may take some time and work but it will be released at some point in the future.)

I hadn't played with Jeff since I broke up my trio in 2000. Since then we have each been developing our own directions that dovetailed niceley with the Rubato concept. As he remarked "Hal, you've gone over to the dark side." which pleased me to no end. It was a joyful reunion. He and John had been playing and recording together for sometime so they were well mated and fell right into the groove. Thier radar-like interaction and instantaneous responses are stunning, acheiving degree of rapprt on a level akin to mind reading.

The CD includes four of my new originals: "Valse Cool," "Figurine," "Chromatic Fantasy," and "Other Days," as well as Jeff Johnson's plaintif original "Zen" and new interpretations of the jazz classics "Milestones," "Naima," and "Miles Ahead."

The album is scheduled for a March 2007 release on Origin Records

If you've been having a hard time finding "Agents Of Change" in retail outlets it's because, until this month, it has only been available through my web site. City Hall Records has signed on to distribute them in all the regular places and they should be available presently.

Alfred Publishing has agreed to reissue "The Touring Musician, A Small Business Approach To Booking Your Bnad On The Road." No release date as of now but am looking forward to seeing this book , which has helped counless musicians get work, back on the shelves again.

TOURING UPDATE

One can only go so far practicing. I'm getting itchy to get out on the road again because it's the only way I can continue to plumb the depths of Rubato playing. At this point in time I can only book myself "in the cracks" of my academic schedule but who knows what the future will bring?

I'll be touring the North West with Jeff & John the end of March early April, to promote the release of "Furious Rubato." Our itinerary is on the home page.

HOME PAGE NEWS

Finally ! Got my MySpace site up and running. It's still a works-in-progress and I'm adding to it as fast as I can. Check out tracks from my "Agents" CD and the new "Furious Rubato "recording as well . You can find addition tracks of my previous recordings on my blog page and I'll be adding more as time allows.

Just added a video track of our trio taped at WVIA-TV for an upcoming internet broadcast, TBA. It features my dedication to Mike Brecker, "Soliloquy". Mike's passing is great personal and professional loss.

IN MEMORIAM

Just added to my Sonicbids site: A video from the same broadcast of "Waiting For Chet."

Also new to my home page are three YouTube videos of me playing with Phil Woods. Two quintet videos of the quintet with Tommy Harrell of "Tenor Of The Times" and "Willow Weep For Me" and a quartet version of "My Old Flame."

NEW PROJECTS

Working on a project with Dave Demsey at William Paterson College for the fall. Dates TBA. With Reggie Workman on bass and Rashid Ali on drums, we'll be playing a concert and recording live using the College's brand new recording studio. As is my wont, I always try to book a few gigs before a recording so keep checking in for our itinerary.

I had planned to finish two new books last summer but "life" intruded. I've been working on a new improvisational concept called "Cell Theory." It's a codification of Coltrane's concepts that I hope readers will find revolutionary. I've been working on internalising Cell Theory. They are just begining to show up in my playing on these two new recordings, which is another reason I look forward to getting back on the road to explore the concept further. I'm not going to write about it until I can play it.

I've been teaching my combo's the "Logistics Of Small Combo Playing" for years. It's a difficult subject to handle in a text format as the subject is experiential in nature. My IAJE Journal article "Practice and Performance Goals for the Jazz Improvisor" touched on some of these ideas but the book with be more in depth. I suspect I'll have to figure out some technological method, perhaps similar to the way I used the internet to explain its concepts in my "Forward Motion" book to get some of its points across.

Cadence Magazine asked me to write an oral history of my early years in Boston and New York City and talk about my infuences. Came out to be well over 12,000 words and was a lot of fun to do, probaly because it was my favorite subject...me. Though I must admit it did reacivate a lot of old and creaky memory cells! Publication TBA.
Please keep in touch and don't forget to add yourself to my MySpace site!
