 COMBO & RHYTHM SECTION WORKSHOPS

       Combo & Rhythm Section Workshops offer a hands-on, experiential approach to learning how to play within a group context. The course is designed to develop the student's ability for group interaction as occurs in "Real-Life" band situations.

The Art of the Rhythm Section = 2 credits

  • The Logistics of Listening: What to listen for, what to do with what you hear
  • Developing instrumental, mental, emotional and physical control
  • Developing concentration techniques
  • How to understand rhythmic, melodic and harmonic call and response patterns
  • Development of "on-your-feet" decision making
  • Rhythmic Syncopation: The historic development of the 2nd line march beat in jazz and it's function
  • Understanding the various aspects of playing time and tempos including coping with stage fright and playing in Half-Time
