We recorded this at one of my favorite places to record, Big Twig Studios just a few miles from my home in the Catskill Mouintains. The album features three new originals plus some surprising interpretations of "Alice In Wonderland," "Be My Love" and "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry."

Despite my reservations I've been dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age of FaceBook. The response has been marvelous since I started my Profile and Trio Page in late May of this year. For the longest time I've been mulling over the problem of how musicians can identify their audience. Looks like FaceBook might be the answer. Time will tell whether Facebook will actually increase audience attendance and help record sales.

If you'd like to add yourself to my profile as a "friend" please do so at:

and to my Trio Page at:

Be advised, all those on my Vertical Response mailing list please join my FaceBook pages for further news and updates on what's going on. In the future I will desist sending out newsletters as they are very labor intensive, taking too much time to create.

Thanks to pianist/vocalist Jon Regen's assistance, October's issue of Keyboard Magazine will feature my article on Forward Motion Fingerings for Bebop scales titled "Banish Bad Fingerings Forever" (the editor's title not mine!). Because of the limitations of space the print version has only a few scales listed but the complete list of scales in all 12 keys will be listed on-line

Please excuse the text faults in this newsletter. It is my first time working with Dreamweaver and it's vagaries are still new to me.

!!Touring News!!

Last August the trio returned to Casais, Portugal for Duarte Mendonca's Estoril Jazz Festival. Part of our appearance included a Q & A session with the audience with translations by one of the country's leading musicians and old friend Ze Eduardo.

This fall is starting to get busy with trio tours of the North East & Midwest as well as a solo appearance at Mohawk College in Hamilton Ontario, Canada for my staunch Forward Motion cohort Darcy Hepner.

The trio will be visiting North Texas State University for two days of clinics and a concert in October.

In January I'll be in Lousville, KY at the Jazz Educator's Network conference speaking on Forward Motion.

I've been invited to be interviewed this December as part of the "Harlem Speaks" series this December at the New School's Performance Space.

Another Northeast trio tour is on the books for next March and a return to the Northwest in April.

Educational News

Falk Willis of Jazz Heaven has invited me to do a DVD on "Cell Theory," a improvisational concept I've been teaching to my private students at Purchase Conservatory and The New School . I've been threatening to write this in book format for years but have been waiting until I made it part of my own playing before publishing it. I much prefer the DVD format and Falk has a strong commitment to the quality of his productions. Other artists he's working with are Lee Konitz, Jerry Bergonzi, Kenny Werner and Ralph Peterson to name a few. I expect we'll begin working on it early next year. Jazz Heaven is still in early pre-release stage but expect to see his productions hitting the streets in the near future. Stay tuned to my FaceBook page for further info on its release.

Last week I had the distinct pleasure to hear pianist Steve Kuhn at Birdland. He was totally killing! One of my earliest influences, he, like myself, Kenny Werner and many others is a protege of Boston's Madam Chaloff.

A few years ago I was talking with Berklee's Stephany Tiernan, another Chaloff alumni. I've often wished I could pass on to my students Chaloff's legacy and was excited when she mentioned she was working on a book/DVD of her teachings.

Steve mentioned that Stephany's book/DVD was out. I found it on Amazon and ordered it immediately. I have yet to receive it but the reviews were excellent and expect it to be in my hands soon. Madam's Technique (she called it the Russian Shoulder Technique at the time) saved my chops and the debt I owe her is incalculable .
