Can this series of solo piano performances get any better? For that matter, what piano player in his right mind would want to follow the virtuoso acts of JoAnne Brackeen, Dave McKenna, Dick Hyman, Walter Norris and Stanley Cowell? Hal Galper, that's who. Galper, who has been hiding out for 10 years in the Phil Wood's quintet, finally got a chance to solo, big time. Attendees at the Otter Crest Jazz Weekend last May got a sampling of just how aggressive and stylistic Galper can be. But few other jazz lovers in America over the past 35 years have ever heard him play anything other than a few phrases while accompanying other soloists. No longer. Galper has emerged as a full-fledged star of the keyboard. This disc confirms what many insiders have know all along: Hal Galper can make a jazz fan get over missing Art Tatum.
